There is a substantial evidence depicting an association of high levels of the protein, called as fetuin-A, with insulin resistance. However, the role of fetuin-A, which is produced by the liver, in the development of diabetes is still unclear. The current study, published in The Journal of the American Medical Association conducted by Joachim and colleagues evaluated the effect of fetuin-A levels on the risk of developing diabetes in elderly.
The trial included 406 people aged 70 to 79 who were initially diabetes-free. Their fetuin-A levels were assessed at the start of the study. The outcome showed that 135 participants among 406 elderly, developed diabetes during the six years of follow-up. The incidence of diabetes increased along with fetuin-A levels. Moreover, older adults with the highest levels of the protein had more than twice the rate of diabetes in comparison to those with the lowest levels. This correlation was independent of other risk factors for diabetes, including obesity, a sedentary lifestyle, and other signs of insulin resistance.
Thus, the results of this novel study concluded that older people with high levels of a liver-related protein, feutin-A have higher probability to develop type 2 diabetes. Further studies are required to determine whether these results would apply to middle-aged adults, as this population accounts for the highest prevalence of new diabetes cases. If the results establishes an association between diabetes and feutin-A in middle-aged adults, targeting fetuin-A can act as a potential therapeutic approach for management of type 2 diabetes.
